RAT HUNTING

GVKC is a Barn Hunt Association Club. We hold two trials annually in November.

Our 2025 Barn Hunt Trials are over and were a great success with many dogs completing new titles. Check back here in 2026 for information regarding our 2026 Barn Hunt Trials. Go to the GVKC facebook page to view the many pictures taken at the trials https://www.facebook.com/GeneseeValleyKennelClub

We also offer rat hunting practice sessions at a member’s house. The Facebook page for our rat hunting activities is https://www.facebook.com/groups/1005629476160980. On that page we announce upcoming practice sessions, GVKC rat game events, and postings about other rat hunting events for other clubs. If you have any questions, contact our Rat Hunting chair, Kris Fletcher at roselandfarm@aol.com.

Rat Hunt practice sessions will close as of Nov. 3 for the winter months. Look for announcements here and on our FB page regarding when rat hunt practices will begin again in the Spring.

This is our summer course. It is comprised of straw bales and set up with the concept of a Barn Hunt Association course. We offer straight, L and U shape tunnels and one to three high climb and hide areas.

Practice sessions for the summer of 2025 begin on June 10 at 6:30 PM. For the rest of the summer, we wait for people to request a practice session. Once a session day/time is picked, an Open Practice Session notice is posted on Roseland Rat Hunting group on Facebook with a start time of 1/2 hour later than the requested time. That allows the person requesting a session some time alone before others arrive to practice. All details about the Open Practice Session are part of the Facebook post.

In 2024 we created a fun event call GVKC Rats Under The Big Top. We offered Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Junior levels.

This is Deb, a GVKC member and her dog Mickey who won first place in the Beginner division of the GVKC Rats Under the Big Top fun rat hunting event.

2025 we ran a fun rat hunting event called GVKC Rat Ramble. We have offered Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Junior and Special levels.

The rat hunting fun event, GVKC RAT RAMBLE has been completed. Our awards will be given out at a luncheon at Bill Gray’s in Webster on May 17, 2025. After that time, the list of participants and their ending scores and placements will be posted here.

Rat Ramble results:

Alli-Gleason 1320 pts. 2nd place medallion.

Cindy-Violet 1175 pts. 3rd place medallion.

Deb-Mickey 1100 pts. 4th place medallion.

Jessica-Gypsy 835 pts. 9th place.

Holly-Mr. Diggs 770 pts. 10th place.

Trish-Hemmi 600 pts. 11th place.

Beginners was a big group, and everyone did a great job working the courses. Alli is specifically now going onto to rat hunting competition with Gleason.

Intermediate:

Holly-Tia 1070 pts. 1st place medallion.

Trish-Teddy 880 pts. 2nd place medallion.

Jackie-Cervena 290 pts. 3rd place medallion.

This group consisted of dogs who had at least one Barn Hunt or Happy Ratter title. Unfortunately, because we had to cancel competition for the month of March due to weather conditions, Jackie was unable to continue competing due to a work commitment.

Advanced:

Diane-Jay 1160 pts. 1st place medallion.

Nanci-Tucker 1070 pts. 2nd place medallion.

Nanci-Bo 1020 pts. 3rd place medallion.

This group consisted of dogs who had multiple Barn Hunt or Happy Ratter titles. They took the competition in stride and the scores were relatively close.

Junior:

Irelynne-Poppy 1095 pts. 1st. place medallion.

This division was open to those under the age of 19. Irelynne borrowed a dog from her aunt and both of them worked wonderful together. She is going to compete in an upcoming Barn Hunt trial.

Special:

Abram-Wally 1140 pts. 1st. place medallion.

This division was for a dog or a person who had a disability. Wally has hip dysplasia which prevents him from being as active as a normal dog would be. Abram did a great job working Wally in a way that did not cause him any discomfort while hunting for a rat.

Almost everyone was able to attend our awards luncheon. The following are pictures from that event.
